Genuine Materials vs Misrepresented Fakes

Why Choose Tech4Tourers

There's been a sharp rise in steering wheels advertised as carbon fibre, genuine leather and Alcantara — that turn up as printed film, synthetic PU and generic microfibre. Here's how to tell the real thing from the rest, and why every T4T wheel is exactly what it says it is.

Real Carbon Fibre vs Printed Imitations

Why You Don't Want Fake Carbon Fibre

Real carbon fibre is woven from carbon strands, laid over the wheel and sealed in epoxy resin — a process that takes real time, skill and cost. "Fake carbon" is a printed vinyl or hydrographic film made to look the part, with none of the structure underneath.

Real Carbon Fibre
Printed Imitation
Woven carbon strands set in epoxy resin
Vinyl or hydrographic film stuck on top
Deep 3D weave with a clean, even gloss
Flat pattern, often a tacky silver sheen
Hand-laid — a genuine material
Appearance only, no real substance

Every T4T carbon wheel is 100% real woven carbon fibre

Genuine Leather vs PU & Vinyl

Why You Don't Want Fake Leather

Faux leather — usually PU or vinyl — looks similar at a glance but behaves nothing like the real thing over time.

Durability
PU and vinyl crack, peel and discolour with use. Genuine leather is more resilient and ages into a patina rather than falling apart.
Maintenance & Repair
Real leather cleans, conditions and can be repaired. Once faux leather starts to deteriorate, it can't be restored.
Breathability & Comfort
Leather is a natural material that breathes and handles temperature. Synthetic builds heat and feels less comfortable in your hands.
Feel
Real leather has natural grain and suppleness. Faux can look close, but feels plastic and flat.

Every T4T wheel uses genuine Napa & perforated leather

Genuine Italian Alcantara vs Microfibre Fakes

Why You Don't Want Fake Alcantara

Genuine Alcantara is an Italian-made material engineered for durability, texture and performance. Generic microfibre sold under the name looks similar but doesn't hold up the same way.

Genuine Italian imported Alcantara
Material Quality
Genuine Italian Alcantara is engineered for durability and performance. Generic microfibre uses lower-grade materials that don't last the same.
Texture & Feel
Authentic Alcantara has a soft, consistent suede-like feel. Fakes can mimic the look but feel artificial up close.
Durability
Genuine Alcantara resists fading, staining and abrasion. Microfibre fakes wear and show their age faster.
Breathability
Genuine Alcantara manages temperature and moisture. Fakes tend to lack it, especially in high-use spots.

We use genuine Italian imported Alcantara

Buyer Beware

How to Spot a Misrepresented Wheel

If you're shopping around, these are the tells that a listing isn't selling what it claims.

Hedged wording like "carbon look," "leather feel" or "Alcantara style" instead of the genuine material
A plasticky silver sheen on the "carbon" — the classic printed-film tell
No material test data or proof — just the word "genuine" in the title
A price that's well below what genuine carbon, leather or Alcantara actually costs to make
Separate Your Rig From the Rest

Genuine materials, tested and proven. No look-alikes.
